Squash

I had the squash for dinner last night. I sliced it into disks, laid them out on a pan sprayed with Pam, sprayed & salted them, & and then oven roasted/fried them (10 min at 400 deg). They were sweet and tasty! So the first squash is a success. Hopefully I can keep up with them.

My first harvest this year. The tomatoes are tasty. Hopefully the squash is good too. I've never grown squash before, so hopefully I picked it at the right time. I found them when I went out to water.

The neighbors have a new puppy, and he stuck his nose under the fence to see what was up. He's a sweet black lab mix; he'll be a big dog someday, but now he's all feet. We'll see how long before he makes enough space under that fence to end up in our yard. It looks like they might have bricks on their side, so maybe that will stop him.

Since I'm not so good at posting or taking photos (I didn't even take a camera), I'll borrow Schondy's post to tell you about our trip to the City. Memorial Weekend Trip to the City (A Thousand Words)

We (Stephen, Chris, Julie & I) went back again on Monday to meet another friend (Jill) & her mother who were spending the week in Napa. That time we drove, so we also went across the Golden Gate Bridge, drove around the Victorian section & had dinner in Alameda. We ate at Planet Crepes. It was killer tasty. Jill suggested it. Apparently it is owned by a relative of a friend of hers. Mmm, BLTA crepe for dinner & banana & Nutella for dessert. We had enough people order enough crepes, that we are one crepe away from a free crepe. Don't know when I'll be back in Alameda, but I'll have to have crepes when I am.

Looks like my install finally finished uploading. Back to work!

Perhaps it is time for a post that contains something other than a link or video. Let's see...

We went skiing at Sugar Bowl last Saturday. We did the crazy up and back in one day trip. It was a beautiful day - sunny and warm. I think I'm finally getting the hang of skiing. By the end of the day I was feeling quite comfortable on my skis and no longer thinking I was going to fall at any moment. Actually, the only time I fell was when I was standing still and a snowboarder took me out at the ankles. I didn't even see him coming. Now, I'm sure that my new found confidence will only lead to much falling if/when I next go skiing. This was our second trip this year. We went to Bear Valley in March for a weekend with the Church Kids. Before that it had been at least 10 years since I last skied and Stephen never downhill skied before. He learned fast.
Saturday we're going to see Ragtime. I'm looking forward to it. I've seen it once before when the Rose Drama Club went to Chicago, but we were very, very high up and far from the stage. It was cool because you could see all the patterns made by the dancing, but I'm looking forward to being a bit closer this time. I love the music; I'll just have to try not to sing. :)
Let's see... last month we went to the Finisar Holiday/20th Anniversary Party. I'll try to scan and post the photo later.
We also went to see Jekyll & Hyde with The Neighbors - that don't live next door anymore - Schondy & Peanut. Another one of my favorites. I wish I could sing like that. I just pretend to in the car when no one is with me.

Dinner is done and I guess that's enough actual news for now. I think the only thing more shocking would be if I'd actually post some photos...

Risotto Style Butternut Squash

I made this for dinner tonight, and it was excellent. I'll do my best to record what I did. But since I couldn't find an actual recipe, there aren't really measurements. Still, I want to write it down for next time.

Frying Pan (I think mine was a 10")
Butter/Olive Oil for the pan
Shallots - diced (I used half a shallot)
White Wine - enough to cover the shallots in the pan (I used about half a tiny bottle)
Butternut Squash - peeled and diced (I used the "neck" of my squash and sliced it into strips with the V-slicer)
Vegetable Broth - heated (I ended up using 1 cup)
Thyme - roughly chopped
Asiago Cheese - grated
Salt/Pepper
Crasians (optional, but tasty)
Chopped Walnuts (he used walnut oil, but a handful or so of chopped walnuts worked for me)

Heat the butter/oil in the pan.
Add the shallots and sweat till slightly translucent. Don't brown.
Add the wine and reduce till slightly syrupy. Maybe half as much as you start with?
Add the squash and part of the warm vegetable broth.
Continue simmering, stirring a bit and adding broth until the squash is cooked and the broth evaporates. The squash should be tender, but not mush. Most of the broth should evaporate, but not dry enough to burn.
Sprinkle on the thyme and stir in.
Fold in the grated cheese.
Salt & pepper to taste.
Fold in the crasians, walnuts or any other additives just long enough to warm them.
Serve sprinkled with more cheese.
