Well in hopes of employment I went to an open house at ebay yesterday. After about a half hour looking for parking, I got in line. This was a line that streached around 3 sides of one of their huge department buildings (jewelry to be exact). There had to be at least 2000 people there. The event only lasted from 4-8. I got in line about 4:45. I had just made it to a point where I could see the light that was the door when a nice man came around asking for software developers. He took us up to a shorter line since apparently the development department wasn't getting as many people. So I made it in to talk with someone. He was quite nice and only seemed slightly tired after talking with hundereds of people. I think that's the first interview I've had with an actual programmer. He didn't really care what my past programs had done. He wanted to know what classes and structures I'd used and what I knew about inheritance and error handeling. Probably much more useful than the slightly fuzzy resources interviews, but I wasn't quite preparred. It's been a while since I've used Java and since I've been home for 8 months I haven't done much programming at all. I stood there in the room packed with people and did my best, but I was really drawing blanks. Well, hopefully they want someone on an entry level? I really do know how to program; I just usually have the resources in front of me. Now I just have to hope that they call me. I asked if he knew how long it might be before they start calling. He said it would probably be twice as long as they though. I watched the news last night and found out ebay expected about 600 people but more than 2000 showed up and they have about 200 jobs. Well, it's not exactly encouraging, but I have been shown again the state of unemployment out here. So it's not just me that can't get a job.
